Pyles Fork Preserve

The most recent of Green Earth's acquisitions, this property spans 124 acres of hardwood bottomland and protects a significant wetland and watershed.   This property was conveyed to Green Earth by the American Lands Conservancy in July of 2009.  This land acquisition was made possible by the generosity of both the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation and the Bridewell Family.

The Pyles Fork Preserve is located in the northeast part of Carbondale, directly east of Attucks Park (North Wall Street).  The majority of the preserve's habitat is hardwood bottomland, which is bisected by Pyles Fork Creek.

Site cleanup and trail development began in March 2009. After a little over a year of debris removal trail clearing, and site development, the preserve officially opened to the public in October 2010.   A one mile hiking trail can be accessed from the Attucks Park exercise path.  This trail loops through the western portion of the property and has an easy level of difficulty.
